Buy frozen fish

Frozen fish and shellfish are in many cases the best choice for high-quality cooks. Do not be afraid to buy frozen fish. In fact, there is no fish that cannot be frozen at the peak of freshness after being pulled out of the water and properly treated, but it is important to think about how it was processed from the freezing point to your plate: where did it come from, how was it frozen, and how to cook before using in your favorite recipes.

Why buy fresh frozen fish is better than fresh?

It may seem logical to think that fresh fish is always better than frozen, but in fact this is not always the case. Modern freezing methods make many fish in the freezer section much better than those referred to as “fresh.” This is due to the fact that now a lot of fish are frozen directly on the boat, just a few minutes after the catch, in instant freeze installations that maintain the temperature much lower than a typical home freezer. And the fish grown on the farm is frozen on site, since the freezers are located directly on the farm sections.

Since more than 85 percent of the seafood we eat is imported, most of this fish freezes before entering our local fish market or grocery store. Looking for fresh frozen fish

Obviously, there is reason to buy frozen fish, but not all frozen fish are created equal. There are some markets where there are rows of fish just thrown into foam packaging and placed in the freezer. To find the best frozen fish, you need to look for one of two things: a sealed fish or a fish with thick frost on it. This is an older freezing method that protects fish well.

And regardless of whether you buy fresh or frozen fish, there are clear signs of whether the fish were stored correctly. If you buy whole fish, you should make sure that:

  • the eyes are clear and not cloudy;
  • fish has a clean and even color;
  • gills red;
  • and, most importantly, the flavor of fish is normal, not repulsive.

What are the advantages of frozen fish?

There are many good reasons to buy frozen fish, including taste, convenience and price. Fish are frozen at the peak of freshness, which allows preserving the taste and texture. And while it does not defrost it is not going anywhere.

When it comes to convenience, nothing compares to frozen fish. Freezing also prolongs the fish season, making fish caught in the summer a tasty treat in the middle of winter. And, as you might suspect, frozen fish is more affordable than fresh fish — about 20 percent.
